Go Do Make!

Happy Monday to you all! I hope May is starting off beautifully for all of you!

If you haven’t already, check out my first Crochet Along! All of the weeks are now available. 🙂

Today I wanted to share a couple of quick projects you can do: crochet keychains! Every year, a friend of mine does a backpack drive for the kids in our area. He is so selfless in his love for the children in this community, and for helping them get the necessary supplies they will need for the upcoming year. Not every family can afford the huge list of school supplies that are required, and this really goes a long way to help them!

I always like to help out however I can. This year I was inspired to make cute little crochet keychains to add to the backpacks. I figured that way each kid could “personalize” their bag a little bit, and it gave me a chance to try out a couple of new patterns. If you’re wanting to achieve different styles of keychain to customize a bag, maybe looking into the likes of these needlepoint products could help you achieve the looks you’re wanting!

I used Lily Sugar n’Cream cotton yarn in Hot Pink for these particular key chains (but any cotton yarn will work), and a 5mm (H) hook.

I wanted to make sure to choose a few designs that could work for girls and boys! I decided to do a granny square, a flower, and a star.

You can find a tutorial for the basic granny square here. I used granny squares in the Hip to be Square Crochet Along. If you want to try a bigger project, check it out! All of the weeks are now available.

Once I had completed two rounds of the granny square pattern, I fastened off my ends and then threaded the key chain loop through one of the ch 3 corners. My square measured approximately 3″ x 3″ when finished. You can find a pack of 100 of these key chain loops on Amazon for just $6.99!

I found the flower tutorial HERE. The first one I made matched my bag so perfectly that I decided to keep it for myself! Don’t worry, I’ll make another one to donate! I found the star tutorial HERE. Each one of these is such a fun quick project. I think I was able to finish each one in about 5 minutes!

We’re hoping to provide backpacks for around 200 children this year, so I definitely have quite a few of these to make! Lily Sugar n’Cream comes has an awesome variety of yarn, so I can make them in lots of different colors! I am still on the lookout for maybe one or two more options. If any of you have any cute keychain patterns, I’d love for you to share them!
