Go Do Make!

Hello and welcome to the first Week of the Hip to be Square Crochet Along! I am so excited to share this project with all of you. I hope you enjoy making this blanket!

Not too long ago I shared the pattern for a crocheted square I had created. I called it the Treble Starburst Square because of the shape in the center. I knew I wanted to create something using that square but at the time could not decide what in the world that might be. I set it aside for a little while so I could finish a few customer orders, and one day the idea came to me! I knew it would be a great accent in a blanket made with a few different types of squares.

I sat down and worked out patterns for a few new squares as well, and starting planning out my blanket. I realized pretty quickly that in order to ensure the proper sizing for each square, I would need to adapt the Treble Starburst Square, but only very slightly. For the purposes of this blanket, we will be skipping Round 3 of the original pattern. That way all the squares are the same size when we are ready to piece them together in Week 7!

As a reminder, I’m using a size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook, and worsted weight size 4 yarn.

We will be making 4 of these squares. Because I tend to love symmetry in my projects I have decided to make all of the squares each week in the same color sequence. But I want you all to feel free to fully express your creativity however you want in this blanket! I shared the colors I chose in the announcement post if you’d like to follow along with me exactly. In my color palette, I have chosen to use Color D (Impeccable Yarn in Teal) as the last row of each square.

Rd 1:   (using color B) Ch 5, sl st to 1st ch to form a circle

Rd 2:   Ch 3, 2 tr, *ch 2, 3 tr, repeat from * 2 times, sl st to 3rd ch

Rd 3:   Ch 3, *dc in each st to corner, *2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in corner, repeat from * to last corner, 1 dc, sl st to 3rd ch to join

Rd 4:   (using color C) Start in corner sp, *3sc in corner sp, sc in each st to corner, repeat from *, sl to join

Rd 5:   (using Color E) Start in 2nd sc in corner, ch 5 (counts as dc and ch 2), dc in same st, *ch 1, sk 1 st, dc to corner, 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in corner, repeat from * to end, sl st to 3rd ch in the ch 5

Rd 6:   (using color A) Start in corner, *5 sc in corner, sc in dc, sc in ch sp, repeat from * around, sl to 1st sc to join

Rd 7:   (using color F) Start in 3rd sc in corner, *2dc, ch 2, 2 dc, dc in each st to corner, repeat from * around, sl to to 3rd ch of dc

Rd 8:   (using color B) Start in corner, *3 sc in corner, sc in each st to corner, repeat from * around, sl to to 1st sc to join

Rd 9:   (using color D) Start in middle sc in corner, ch 3, 1 dc, ch 2, 2dc, *dc in each st to corner, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in corner, repeat from * around, sl st to 3rd ch of dc

And voila! There you have the adapted Treble Starburst Square! Don’t forget to make 4 of these squares. Next week we will making a simpler square pattern, so we will making 8 squares. See you then!

If you don’t think making a bunch of squares is for you, check out the Mixed Stitch Blanket CAL.
