Free Crochet Pattern

Today I want to share with you a new pattern I devised. I wanted to try a different shape than I had done before, so I tried to think of a way to do that. I came up with this cute pattern, the Twelve Point Star Blanket. It is worked in the round, and uses the chevron style to create the points.

For this blanket, I used approximately one skein each of  Caron Simply Soft yarn in Pagoda and Plum Perfect, and about 1 and a half skeins of Caron Jumbo Prints yarn in Peacock. I tried to crochet over  my ends as much as possible to minimize finishing.

Finished Size: Approximately 48” diameter from point to point
Crochet Hook: Size H (5 mm).  Adjust hook size as necessary to obtain gauge.
Gauge: 15 stitches, 8 rows = 4” in double crochet

Always ch 2 at the beginning of a round, not 3. This makes the join less visible.

Stitch Abbreviations:  ch: chain
st: stitch
sl st: slip stitch
dc: double crochet
small V-stitch: (dc, ch 2, dc) in same space
large V-stitch: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space

Using color A, ch 4. Join with sl st to form a ring.

R1: Ch 2 (counts as first dc throughout pattern), work 11 dc in ring (12 dc). Join with sl st in top of ch2 from beginning (join in this manner throughout pattern).
R2: Ch 2, dc in same st, 2 dc in each dc around (24 dc). Join.
R3: Ch 2, *skip next dc, work (dc, ch 2, dc) in next dc. Repeat from * around, ending with dc in base of beginning stitch, ch 2, join with sl st in top of ch2 from beginning. Join.
R4: Sl st into ch 2 space, work (ch 2, dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 space, * work large V-stitch in next ch 2 space, repeat from * around. Join.
R5: Sl st into next st, ch 2,  *work large V-stitch in ch 2 space, dc in next dc, skip next 2 dc, dc in next st. Repeat from * around. Join.
R6: Sl st into next st, ch 2, dc in next st, * work large V-stitch in ch 2 space, dc in each of next 2 dc, skip the next 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 dc. Repeat from * around, ending with skip 2 sts. Join, cut yarn.
R7: Sl st into next st, ch 2, dc in next 2 sts, * work small V-stitch in next ch 2 space, dc in next 3 sts, skip 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts. Repeat from * around, ending with skip 2 sts. Join, cut yarn.

R8: Using Color B, sl st into next st, ch 2, dc in next 2 sts, * work large V-stitch in ch 2 space, dc in next 3 sts, skip next 2 sts, dc in the next 3 sts. Repeat from * around, ending with skip 2 sts. Join.
R9: Using Color A, Sl st into next st, ch 2, dc in next 3 sts, * work large V-stitch in ch 2 space, dc in next 4 sts, skip next 2 sts, dc in next 4 sts. Repeat from * around, ending with skip 2 sts. Join.
R10: Sl st into next st, ch 2, dc in next 4 sts, * work small V-stitch in ch 2 space, dc in next 5 sts, skip next 2 sts, dc in next 5 sts. Repeat from * around, ending with skip 2 sts. Join.
R11: Using Color C, Sl st into next st, ch 2, dc in next 4 sts, * work large V-stitch in ch 2 space, dc in next 5 sts, skip next 2 sts, dc in next 5 sts. Repeat from * around, ending with skip 2 sts. Join.
R12: Using Color A, Sl st into next st, ch 2, dc in next 5 sts, * work large V-stitch in ch 2 space, dc in next 6 sts, skip next 2 sts, dc in next 6 sts. Repeat from * around, ending with skip 2 sts. Join, cut yarn.
R13: Sl st into next st, ch 2, dc in next 6 sts, *work small V-stitch in ch 2 space, dc in next 7 sts, skip next 2 sts, dc in next 7 sts. Repeat from * around, ending with skip 2 sts. Join, cut yarn.

Continue working in rounds in pattern as established, always working 1 round with the small V-stitch,  followed by 2 rounds with the large V-stitch. I worked 2 rounds using the Peacock yarn (with the large V-stitch), then 1 round alternating the solid colored yarns. For the final round I ended on a solid color, using the large V-stitch. Continue repeating rounds 8-13 with the number of dc increasing in each large V-stitch round between the “ch 2 space” and the “skip 2 sts” until the last round of rainbow colors is worked.  Join, cut yarn.

Last round: Using color B, work a large V-stitch round. This is the only solid colored round that is a large V-stitch, and this is to create sharp points around the edge of your afghan that will lay flat. Weave in any remaining ends. Block gently.

Of course, you can continue this blanket to be as big as you want it to be! Just keep doing your increases in each round to make sure you keep the points of your star sharp. Just make sure to work a large V-stitch in the final round wherever you decide to end for stability. If you’d like to try a different blanket pattern check out the Three Color Baby Blanket.
