2019 Block-A-Week : Week 1

Hello and welcome to Couch Surfer Crochet!

Since a new year has just begun, I’ve decided to start a fun project that I can work on all year long.I love making crochet squares of all types. I am fascinated by the way you can take simple stitches, put them together in unexpected ways, and have the most interesting looking square when you are done! I’ve done two different Crochet Alongs using squares. The first one, the Hip to be Square blanket, used the basic granny in addition to a few squares of my own design. The second CAL, the Stash Buster Granny Square blanket, used basic granny squares with specific color placement.

I thought about doing the “365 Days of Granny Squares” challenge, but I know I would get distracted somewhere along the way and get frustrated, so I’m simplifying that to ONE a week and only picking my favorite squares! I plan to do ONE square each week and at the end of the year make all of those into a unique and interesting blanket! Each square will be 12″. Some of the squares will be my own design, and some I have found online!

Since the New Year starts in the middle of the week, I will be posting my weekly granny squares on Fridays. I won’t have video tutorials available for each of those at first, but I do hope to get there soon!

I’m using a size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook, and worsted weight size 4 yarn for every one of these squares to keep stitch sizing consistent.

I have listed color changes in the pattern. However!! Feel free to change colors as few or as many times as you want!! Color changes listed in pattern are just my suggestion, please feel free to stretch your creativity and make these squares any way you want to. I think it would even be pretty amazing in one solid color!

The colors I used are:

Color 1: Impeccable Yarn in Bright Sky Blue
Color 2: Red Heart Super Saver in Pale Yellow
Color 3: Impeccable Yarn in Grape Punch
Color 4: Red Heart Jumbo in Pretty N’ Pink
Color 5: Red Heart Super Saver in Aruba Sea

You can find ALL of the weeks of this project here:

(all of the weeks are posted there)

Since this the first square of this project and of the year, I’m keeping it simple and calling it the “New Year Square!”

  1. I would love to be on you mailing list. What a fab idea a square a week!! I am joining you on week 3, hopefully I will catch up, any hints for blocking the squares?

  2. I’m late finding you. How many of each squares are necessary to make this? Or Ami missing this is a 52 week CAL? Thank you!

    • I’m planning to do a block each week for 50 weeks of the year. I will make two 5×5 (25 squares each) blankets using the 12″ squares. 🙂
