Hello! I hope you are all having an amazing January so far! It’s unseasonably warm (at least today!) here in Tennessee, so I thought it would be the perfect time to break out one of my lighter weight scarves. Last year I shared a yarn review for Caron Cakes yarn. I was so excited to try out self-striping yarn! Well…did you know that Red Heart now has their own line of self-striping yarns, appropriately called Red Heart Stripes?! They have some of the most amazing colors, and I couldn’t wait to try out a few of them!
For Christmas my husband bought me two awesome books about Crochet! They are both full of fun and unique stitches, and I knew I wanted to try a few new stitches right away! I got the Crochet Stitch Dictionary, which starts with basic stitches (single crochet, double crochet, etc.) and works its way into very intricate stitches. I also got The Big Book of Crochet Stitches, which has much more involved stitches all the way throughout.
In the “Big Book” I found a stitch called “Little Spiders.” I loved the look of it, but wanted to adapt it slightly to achieve the look I wanted. I have decided to call this the “Beautiful Boxes Scarf.” I love the way the yarn looks with this stitch. The gradual color changes keep it fun and bright, while the open weave keeps the fabric light and airy.
Materials:
Worsted Weight Yarn (I used Red Heart Stripes in Retro Stripe)
Size: 6.5″ wide x 60″ long
Abbreviations:
ch= chain
dc= double crochet
tr- triple crochet
sc= single crochet
Notes: To adjust the width of this scarf, make the beginning chain a multiple of 8, plus 5.
Beautiful Boxes Scarf Pattern:
Ch 21
R1: Dc in 4th ch from hook (this counts as dc), 1 dc in each st to end of row
R2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc into each of next 2 dc, *ch 3, (skip 1 dc, 1 tr into next dc) twice, ch 3, skip 1 dc, 1 dc into each of next 3 dc; repeat from * to end, turn.
R3: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc into each of next 2dc, * ch 3, 1 sc into each of next 2 tr, ch 3, 1 dc into each of next 3 dc; repeat from * to end, working last dc into 3rd ch of starting ch3, turn.
R4: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc into each of next 2 dc, *ch 1, 1 tr into first sc, ch 1, 1 tr into next sc, ch 1, 1 dc into each of next 3 dc; repeat from * to end, turn.
R5: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc into each of next 2 dc, * (1 dc into next ch, 1 dc into next tr) twice, 1 dc into next ch, 1 dc into each of next 3 dc; repeat from * to end, working last dc into 3rd ch of starting ch3, turn
R6: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each st to end of row
Repeat rows (2-6) 18 times, making 20 cube sections total. I continued the pattern until I had used the whole skein, but the length of your scarf is up to you! Just be sure to end on a R5 or R6 so you can sew your ends together!
Fasten off, leaving a long tail end. Using your yarn needle and the long tail end, stitch the two ends together with a whip stitch.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
