Block A Week 2019 – Edging Your Squares

Hello! Welcome to Couch Surfer Crochet!

I hope you have been having fun making all the squares for the Block A Week 2019 Project! It’s been great to find new designers and be able to share that with all of you.

One of the things I realized early on in this project was that each square could have a different number of stitches on each side. I looked through all kinds of tutorials for joining squares together but I didn’t think any of them would look good with all the squares I had put together.

I sat down and did * a lot * of math, which isn’t my strong suit! LOL :). I came up with my own method to make all of these squares “even” that will also tie in to the final joining method.

If you’re anything like me you might want to get a head start on creating all those edges. There are 25 squares in total, after all!

So bear with me on this post. It might be a bit long so I can cover the variations for each square. Thankfully, some of the squares had the same number of stitches on each side, so those can be edged using the same technique. I have broken down this tutorial by the number of stitches on the outside of each square. I have linked with each tutorial all of the squares that can be done in that manner.

I have listed the edges all the way through Week 23. The last 2 weeks will be added to this chart as they are posted!

I chose to use a completely NEW color to join all my squares. I chose a medium purple color (Red Heart Super Saver in Lavender). It complements all of the other colors without competing with them! I also plan to incorporate it into the final border to make the whole things more cohesive. Of course you can use any color you want to make your edging. You could even do a different color on each square if you are using this project as a stash buster!

Since each square is a different size we need to get each one to look the “same” somehow. So we will be adding a border to each one so that they look like this:

The chart below will show you how many stitches to skip on each square to ensure that you have 10 “loops” per side (plus the two on each corner) on each square.
