Go Do Make!

Week 1

Rows 1 – 10

Welcome to the Mixed Stitch Blanket Crochet Along, brought to you by Couch Surfer Crochet!

Thanks for joining me on this Crochet Along! Below is the pattern for the first 10 rows.

For this project I chose to use 6 colors, chosen at random throughout the piece.

I used Red Heart Yarn in Soft Navy, Claret, Gray Heather and Buff, as well as Impeccable Yarns in Lavender and Deep Forest.

Stitches used in this pattern are located HERE.

If you would prefer to read a chart, those are available HERE.

To begin this project you will need to determine the number of chains you need to start with.

Begin by chaining any multiple of 24 + 2 (i.e. 98, 122, 146, etc., and be careful not to chain too tightly!). With my worsted weight yarn and my H/8/5mm, I chained 218 total to make my throw about 60″/180cm wide, but you make yours however long you want to! As long as it’s a multiple of 24 plus 2 you’re fine! Double check your starting chain count so you don’t have to start over later.

Start with foundation chain. I chained 218 if you want to make your blanket the same size as mine!

Row 1:    hdc in 3rd chain from hook, hdc in all st to end of row, turn

Row 2:   ch 2, hdc in all st to end of row, turn

Row 3:   ch 2, hdc in all st to end of row, turn

Row 4:   ch 3, dc in all st to end of row, turn

Row 5:   repeat row 4

Row 6:   Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, *3 dc in next st, skip 2sts, repeat from * to second to last st,  2 dc in the second last st, and then 1dc in the last st (to make a straighter edge)

Row 7:   ch 2, hdc in first 2 st of granny cluster, **3rd hdc goes into the “space” created between clusters.

Row 8:   repeat row 6

Row 9:   repeat row 7

Row 10: ch 3, dc in all st to end of row, turn

Granny stripe stitch detail. Working it this way makes it much sturdier as a finished piece.

My first 10 rows look like this:

That completes the first segment of this Crochet Along! I hope you’ve enjoyed starting this project! Join me every other Monday for the next 10 rows!

  1. Hi, Is there something missing from the directions for row 7 or am I just not understanding? Do we HDC all the way across? Row 7: ch 2, hdc in first 2 st of granny cluster, **3rd hdc goes into the “space” created between clusters.

  2. I was going to buy the supplies for this afghan when I noticed you said you used DK yarn for yours. I’m not sure if I should buy worsted weight or DK weight? Thanks

    1. I’m so sorry for any confusion! I just realized my typo! I meant worsted weight yarn! I used Red Heart Super Saver and Impeccable yarns for this particular project. Hope that helps!

I have fixed the typo on the blog post so hopefully I won’t confuse anyone else! Thanks for catching that for me!

  3. Hi Amber. I am just about to start this 🙂
I am a beginner….have done a couple of CALS similar to yours as I like practicing and learning new stitches. So thanks for putting this together.

If I do the same number of stitches as you, using 6 colors, how many balls of wool will I need? I am not familiar with the brand you are using, it does not get shipped to Australia. I can’t see the size of each ball or how many I might need. Looking forward to hearing back from you 🙂

    1. Hello! Thanks for joining us from Australia! I used Red Heart Super Saver, which is approx. 364 yards per skein. For a couple of the colors I didn’t come close to using all of it because I didn’t feature those colors as much!

    1. I wanted to leave that option up to each creator! I had one person who made her blanket a solid color and it was gorgeous! I also had someone use scrap yarn to make a very colorful piece! Best rule of thumb I used when creating the pattern was to change colors every time I switched to a new stitch. Hope that helps!
