Go Do Make!

Welcome to Couch Surfer Crochet!

We are finally getting some cooler fall weather where I live, which has put me in a hat making mood! I start making donation hats around this time every year. My goal is to make 2  – 3 per week until the holidays so that I have plenty of hats on hand. I always donate to local shelters, churches and nursing homes during the cold weather months. I know the power of a good, warm hat, and I am so happy to share my work with others. Crochet is a useful skill that is also FUN!

Because I get bored if I make the same thing over and over again, I always look for new hat patterns to try while growing my donation pile. It keeps me creatively motivated and also makes each hat unique for whoever will receive it!

Today I will be sharing three FREE hat patterns! Two of my own design, and one I fell in love with when I found it on Pinterest.

I’m using all my scrap yarn for my hats to help empty out some of my stash! What I love about these patterns is there are infinite color options you can choose! E

Each hat is made using a 5.5 mm hook.

The first pattern is what I call the “Switch It Up Beanie”, because it is so versatile! You can make it all in one color, or change colors whenever you want to make a cool stripe pattern.

The Switch It Up Beanie (basic crochet beanie pattern)

R1: ch 3; 10 dc in the 3rd chain from the hook; sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join
R2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st around, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join
R3: ch 2, (2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in the next st) 10 x, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join
R4: ch 2, (2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts) 10 x, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join
R5: ch 2, (2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts) 10 x, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join
R6: ch 2, (2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in each of the next 4 sts) 10 x, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join
R7: ch 2, (2 dc in the first st, 1 dc in each of the next 5 sts) 3 x, 1 dc in each remaining st around, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join
R8: ch 2, 1 dc in each st around, sl st to the 1st dc of the round to join
R9-R14: repeat R8
R15: 1 sl st (loosely as this is a decorative edge) in each st around, finish off and weave in ends

To make child size, skip Round 6 and 7. For teens, skip Round 7!

The second hat is called the “Criss Cross Stripes” Hat! The simple Criss Cross stitch gives it a unique texture and style!

The final hat is not my design. I found it on Pinterest. It’s called the Prisma Hat! It’s a perfect stashbuster to use up all your yarn scraps! You can find the pattern here!

I’m working on partnering with a local charity in my area to spread the love farther and wider this year. If you would be interested in helping or adding to our donation pile, email me at couchsurfercrochet@email.com.
